FAQs

Are my pets and I able to meet the host in her or his home before boarding?

Yes, it is important to meet you and your pet in the host’s home so you are comfortable knowing your pet is in the best environment. Please plan ahead for this meeting. Please remember that these are private homes and times are scheduled BY APPOINTMENT ONLY with the host.

How are the hosts chosen?

We have a stringent screening process. Starting with an application, then a phone interview, then a home check. Very few hosts are accepted. Click here for more information.

Will dogs have a fenced yard?

Most of our host homes have fenced yards, some larger than others. Only a few homes may not have a yard but those hosts are required to take your dog on at least 2 leisure walks a day, in addition to their frequent potty breaks.

Do you limit the number of dogs a host takes?

Yes, each host family has a limit of 1-3 dogs depending on their wishes. We take care to match boarders to hosts based on their personalities.

Will my pet be the only pet in a home?

Your pet may or may not be the only pet depending on the bookings each host has at the time your pet comes to stay in that home.

Are all dogs accepted?

We love all dogs but they must be well-mannered, socialized, and non-destructive. Dogs with very boisterous, aggressive or nervous tendencies, severe separation anxiety or that are overly rambunctious and unable to relax, or males that lift their legs inside the home are not a good fit for a home environment.  We reserve the right to refuse service to any dog or breed we feel, in our sole discretion, might be a risk to the safety or comfort of our host or other pets.

Will I have the same host each time?

We try to keep your pet with the same host, as long as the host is available at the times you will need them.

My dog does not play well with other dogs. Do you have a host home where they can stay without another pet?

We will try to accommodate your pet in a home without other pets on a space available basis.

Are dogs ever separated?

The host homes are cage-less environments so we do separate dogs at feeding times, or when are going to be away from the home even for short periods of time, or we have a dog that prefers a quiet area to rest. We don’t use crates, only gates and rooms of the home for this purpose. You must supply the crate if you prefer your pet to be crated.

Where would my pet sleep?

Pets sleep wherever they want – the couch, our bed, their own bed, or any spot where they are most comfortable. However, if you have house rules that you would like the host to follow, please let us know so we can keep the routine to which they are accustomed.

Do I bring my pet’s food?

Yes, please provide your pet’s normal diet, as changes in the diet may cause stomach upset. Never change the food prior to boarding with us to avoid a possible vet’s visit.

How far in advance do I have to book?

Because we only take a maximum 3-dog limit, space fills up quickly. Please contact us as far as possible in advance. We need at least 1 week initially to get the necessary paperwork and to set up the meeting . We do not overbook!  Please make your reservations as early as possible to assure availability, especially for Holidays.  New clients must make reservations with a minimum 7 days’ notice.

Do I need to fill out any paperwork prior to a consultation?

Yes, the purpose of the paperwork is to know about your pets so that they can be matched with the best host for their personality and routine. Once completed, we will choose the host and she or he will call you to set up a time for your tour, consultation and pet evaluation.

What times can I drop off and pick up my dog?

Appointments are available 7 days a week. Because these are private homes, these times are BY APPOINTMENT ONLY and agreed upon by clients and the pet hosts according to their schedules. If you are going to be early or late for your appointment, please be courteous by calling and letting your host know. Remember that your pets are staying in a private home and your hosts may have appointments of their own. Please, be on time and never show up un-announced. Pick-ups or drop-offs are not available during holidays so make plans accordingly; however, the office does check our phone for emergencies.

What are you health requirements?

For the safety and well-being of the pets in our care, all pets must be current on the following vaccines:
Parvo/Distemper, Rabies and Bordetella (canine cough). All dogs must be free of fleas, ticks, parasites and communicable diseases and must be on monthly flea, tick and heart guard prevention. Records are required prior to entering the homes. Please let us know if your pet is micro-chipped. All pets must wear a current rabies tags, or bring it with you to the host.

What if I have a senior pet or one that cannot be vaccinated?

You will need to have a note from your veterinarian and your pet must stay in a home that does not have other pets.

Will you administer medication?

Yes, and there is no extra charge for the administration of oral medications.

Do you accept puppies?

Yes, we do accept puppies that are crated so that we can make sure they are kept consistent with their home training.  They must have had all of the series of shots before being able to board with us.

Do dogs have to be house trained?

Yes, all dogs must be potty trained with the exception of puppies being crate trained.

Do you take special needs or older pets?

Yes we do, but we prefer to keep them in a host home where they are the only dog or they will be with dogs of similar needs for their comfort. They must not be incontinent.

Will you take dogs to a Dog Park?

No, we will not take your dog to a park for liability reasons.

Will my pet be kept inside or outside of the home?

Your pet remains indoors unless the host is able to supervise them while they are outdoors.

Do you carry liability insurance?

Yes, we carry a liability policy that covers all of our hosts in case of negligence.

Will you bathe my pet before I pick-up him or her?

We would be glad to provide this service for an additional fee. This service must be requested when they are dropped off.  Any pet found with fleas will be bathed and treated with CAPSTAR, a medication that kills fleas within 24 hours, and this will be done at owner’s expense.

Are our children allowed to come to the consultation?

We love children but insurance companies don’t think children and unknown dogs are a good mixture. Please make arrangements for a consultation when you can leave your children at home for their safety.

Can I hire my host directly without going through your office?

All of our hosts are under a contract with Pooches in Pajamas to never accept reservations directly from our clients. This would violate the host’s exclusive contractual agreement with us and would result in their termination, plus monetary damages for breach of contract.

What do I do if my trip is delayed?

We understand plans can change; however, we book other pets depending on your check out dates and times. If you will be delayed, please advise us as soon as possible. Extra fees may apply.
